
The present Labour Government
sets out in some detail in its "Low
Carbon Transition Plan" how they
intend to deliver a large - legally
binding - reduction in carbon
emissions.
The plan is built, sector by sector
around a massive growth in
renewable energy, from 2% of all
energy generation today, to 15% by 2020, just 10 years away...
The chart on the left illustrates
clearly the extent of the challenge.
This shows that to achieve this,
40% of electricity will be generated
from low carbon technologies by
2020, the majority of this will come
from renewables. Nuclear will
contribute only 8% of electricity by 2020, compared to 13% today. This is because the closure of existing plants is taking place at a faster rate than new plants can be built.
Upgrading of the National Grid will be speeded up to enable easier connection of renewable technologies, and provide greater capacity for the future.
