It's true that the original low energy bulbs were very expensive, bulky, heavy and produced a light that was weak, cold and harsh.
Remember the early "mobile" 'phones?! Well, technology in light bulbs has moved on too... Costs have come down and low energy bulbs are now smaller, weigh less and output a light that is comparable to the brightness of traditional bulbs. The cost to purchase low energy bulbs is still much higher than traditional bulbs, but they last 10 times longer and use a fraction of the electricity of their incandescent predecessors. So, despite the price premium, low energy light bulbs pay for themselves through savings in electricity very quickly.
Here's a simple table as a guide to which low energy bulbs you should purchase to replace your existing incandescent bulbs and the typical savings. These figures will vary according to the actual cost of the bulbs purchased and the price paid for electricity:
|
Traditonal Incandescent Bulbs |
Equivalent Low Energy Bulbs |
Typical Saving Over Bulb Lifetime |
| 100 watt | 20-25 watt | £25 - £45 |
| 60 watt | 13-18 watt | £13 - £25 |
| 40 watt | 8-11 watt | £8 - £15 |
| 25 watt | 6 watt | £3 - £7 |
