A new - long term - scheme to incentivise the generation of low carbon electricity by offering "clean energy cashback" payments to businesses, communities, public sector organisations and homeowners was introduced by the Labour Government on 1 April 2010. The Coalition Government is wholly committed to maintaining this method of incentives.
These payments are called "Feed-in Tariffs" (FiTs) and consist of two elements:
The first is a payment per kilowatt hour (kWh) for every unit of electricity generated onsite. The more of this electricity that is used your site, the more you will also save by not having to purchase that amount of electricity from your supplier
The second is an additional payment made for every kWh that is generated onsite and exported to the grid, ie it is not used onsite.
FiTs are payable for either 20 or 25 years* and inflation linked at various levels, depending on the technology used and the size of installation. To be eligible for FiTs the maximum capacity for any one installation is 5MW and both the technology and the installer must be Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accredited.
