The evidence that climate change is a reality has been building steadily for many years. The consequences of melting ice caps, rising sea levels, changing seasons, more storms, more droughts and tsunamis, touch us all in many different ways.
The evidence that carbon emissions (CO2) resulting from the production and use of energy derived from fossil fuels has been the most significant contributor to climate change has become overwhelming in the last few years. We have all been impacted in some way by legislation, taxes and government sponsored advertising geared to reducing our emissions of CO2
Now it is not a question of whether or not climate change is taking place or if CO2 emissions are the major driver behind this change, it is what can and must be done quickly to prevent the change becoming catastrophic for the planet on which we live.
Sceptics about climate change are themselves close to extinction as they have at last accepted that – literally – the survival – of animal and human life is at risk.
How to slow down and eventually reverse the rate of climate change is now the focus of debate.
The arguments rage about nuclear energy; cutting down on flights; improved insulation of buildings; incentives vs penalties; carbon trading schemes; the impact of economic growth in China and India; installation of wind turbines on every home; and so on and so forth…
…in the meantime the climate continues to change and the world is getting warmer.
There is much legitimate scientific and economic debate on many of these and other issues. Unfortunately there is also a lot of misleading information about and advertising of potential solutions and sometimes quite simply false claims – particularly regarding renewable energy.
Watt-Knots does not pretend to have all the answers!
