All the living matter on earth offers potential for use in the generation of biomass energy. Wood, straw, sunflowers and elephant grass (miscanthus) are just a few examples of plant material than can be grown specifically as a fuel for energy production. In addition to these and many other energy crops, by-products (such as wood chips) and agricultural waste can be utilised.
Biomass energy is considered to be "carbon-neutral" due to the fact that the CO2 absorbed by plants during growth is equal to the amount of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere during the energy production process.
