Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a low carbon technology that converts organic waste materials into a renewable energy source for the generation of electricity and heat.

It is a natural process using bacteria to breakdown a wide range of organic matter (eg manure, sileage, slurry, food waste, etc) in a sealed, controlled environment resulting in a biogas that is burned to generate energy.

Up until recently this has only made economic sense with a relatively large scale plant taking waste inputs from a number of sites. However, smaller systems are now available and can offer very attractive financial returns utilising waste materials from the site on which the plant is located.
